Activating your UnitedHealthcare health care card is a quick and straightforward process that unlocks full access to your benefits, your digital member ID card, and the UHC member portal. This guide walks you through every available activation method so you can choose the option that works best for you and get started with your coverage right away.

Before You Begin

Gather the following information before starting the activation process — you’ll need it regardless of the method you choose:
Your new UHC health care card (physical card in hand)
Your Member ID number, printed on the front of your card
Your date of birth as it appears on your plan enrollment records
Your ZIP code associated with your UHC plan
A valid email address for account creation and communications

Activation Methods

Activating online is the fastest method and gives you immediate access to the full member portal experience.
1

Visit the activation portal

Open a web browser and navigate to activate.uhc.com. Click the Activate Your Card button on the homepage.
2

Enter your card details

Input your Member ID number and date of birth exactly as they appear on your enrollment records. Click Continue.
3

Verify your identity

You may be prompted to verify your identity via a one-time code sent to your email or phone number on file. Enter the code when prompted.
4

Create or sign in to your account

If you’re a new member, you’ll be guided to create a UHC online account using your HealthSafe ID. Returning members can sign in with existing credentials.
5

Confirm activation

Review your plan details on the confirmation screen and click Activate. You’ll receive a confirmation email once your card is successfully activated.

After Activation: What to Do Next

Once your card is active, take a few minutes to set up your account for the best member experience:
  • Download the UHC mobile app if you haven’t already — it provides on-the-go access to your ID card, benefits, and claims history
  • Save your digital member ID card to your phone’s wallet for easy access at provider offices
  • Set up paperless statements to receive Explanations of Benefits (EOBs) electronically
  • Review your benefits summary to understand your deductibles, copays, and covered services

Troubleshooting Activation Issues

Double-check that you’re entering the Member ID exactly as it appears on your card, including any leading letters or zeros. If the issue persists, your enrollment may still be processing — wait 24–48 hours after receiving your card and try again.
Check your spam or junk mail folder. If the code still hasn’t arrived, confirm that the email or phone number on file with UHC is current. You can also request a new code by clicking Resend Code on the verification screen.
Your card may have been activated automatically or by another plan member. Sign in to activate.uhc.com using your HealthSafe ID to access your account. If you believe there’s an error, contact Member Services.
If you continue to experience activation issues, call the Member Services number on the back of your card for direct assistance.
