Your UnitedHealthcare Health Care Card is the key to accessing your health plan benefits — but before you can use it, you’ll need to activate it. Activation only takes a few minutes and confirms that the card is in your hands. Whether you prefer to do things online, on your phone, or over the phone, UHC gives you three easy ways to get your card up and running.

Before You Begin

Before starting, locate your new UHC Health Care Card. You’ll find your Member ID number, group number, and the customer service phone number printed directly on the card. Keep these details handy — you’ll need them during the activation process.
Never share your Member ID, card number, or personal account credentials with anyone who contacts you unsolicited. UnitedHealthcare will never ask for your full Social Security Number or payment information to activate your card. If something feels off, call the number on the back of your card directly.

Option 1: Activate Online at activate.uhc.com

Activating online is the fastest and most convenient option for most members. Here’s exactly how to do it:
1

Go to activate.uhc.com

Open your preferred web browser and navigate to activate.uhc.com. Make sure you’re on the official UnitedHealthcare website — look for the padlock icon in your browser’s address bar confirming a secure connection.
2

Sign in or create your myuhc.com account

If you already have a myuhc.com account, sign in with your existing username and password. If you’re a new member, select “Create Account” and follow the prompts to register. You’ll need your Member ID from your card, your date of birth, and a valid email address.
3

Enter your card details

Once signed in, you’ll be prompted to enter your Health Care Card information. Type in your Member ID number and any other details shown on your card exactly as they appear.
4

Confirm your identity

UHC uses a quick identity verification step to protect your account. You may be asked to confirm your date of birth, ZIP code, or answer a security question. Some members may receive a one-time verification code by email or text.
5

Activation complete!

Once your identity is confirmed, your card will be activated immediately. You’ll see a confirmation message on screen and may receive a confirmation email. Your card is now ready to use at doctors’ offices, pharmacies, and other covered providers.

Option 2: Activate Through the UHC Mobile App

If you’re always on the go, the UnitedHealthcare mobile app is a great way to activate your card and manage your benefits from anywhere.
  1. Download the UnitedHealthcare app from the App Store or Google Play.
  2. Open the app and sign in with your myuhc.com credentials — or create a new account if you haven’t already.
  3. Navigate to “My Plan” or “My Coverage” from the home screen.
  4. Follow the on-screen prompts to activate your new card.
The app also lets you view your digital ID card, check claim status, find in-network providers, and review your Explanation of Benefits — all in one place.
Save a digital copy of your card in the UHC app so you always have it on hand, even if you forget your physical card at home. Many providers accept digital ID cards at check-in.

Option 3: Activate by Phone

Prefer to speak with someone directly? You can activate your card by calling the member services number printed on the back of your Health Care Card. A UHC representative will walk you through the activation process and answer any questions you have about your new plan. Phone lines are generally available Monday through Friday during business hours, though hours may vary by plan type.

After Activation: What’s Next?

Now that your card is active, take a moment to:
  • Review your Summary of Benefits — log in to myuhc.com to see exactly what your plan covers.
  • Set up paperless statements to keep your health information organized and secure.
  • Register a primary care physician (PCP) if your plan requires one.
